I have been on YouTube and doing hair product reviews for the past five years. I have learned a lot about keeping my sanity in check. I have learned about my value and self-worth. My time or creativity is not to be wasted or taken for granted. What a lot of influencers won’t tell you is that you should never overexert yourself for nobody’s brand.

For example, a brand wants to work with you on Instagram and wants to pay you to do carry out (such and such) you don’t need to cross-promote them on your other platforms.

You just don’t. Here’s why...

If you are going to do a. and b. for any brand don’t push the limit and do more. They 9 times out of 10 aren’t even going to pay you! So you’re promoting them for free. Sending them loyal and or potential customers.

So how many times will the brand cut you a check? Do you even have a discount code? If so then for how long your code is valid for?

If there was not something so appealing about you and your platform no matter the size then they would have never agreed to work with you.

You have value. You have influence.

You also possess more value than the money they sent or the product(s) you received for free. Even if it’s just PR you don’t have to go above and beyond to promote it for any brand.

Do what’s written on the contract or agreement and keep it pushing. Don’t let any company use you. I don’t care if they are even black owned! I use to feel guilty about not doing more to prove myself to a brand when they worked with me.

I realized that everyone who is in the influencer world can feel many burdens. Many influencers carry guilt, depression, and self-esteem issues. They mask their troubled emotions with smiles, taking on more work, and even shopping.

I know I just jumped topics. Everything that looks so fulfilling on social media isn’t always the same in reality. So for the next time you want to do a little more than what’s asked of you for a brand, don’t. There are better opportunities on the way. If it was meant to be then the brand would be paying you more money for cross promotion.
