Showing posts with label holiday season

I can hear them snore from their beds as I peek my head into the bedroom. Christmas Eve in my apartment is quiet and yet it feels inviting. It is something about the pause before the morning, the deep breath held in before joy is released. My kids have been under the weather for the past three days with intense fevers. I have been holding it down as I overcame a fever and cold too.

Christmas Eve during the day feels chill. I have been counting down the days until Christmas break from work and school for weeks. I am blessed to say that this countdown has been worth it. The hours seem to have been moving slower this morning. The air feels lighter and less chill, but the fog seems to be cradling the area. The sounds of the busy highway carries a quiet sense of anticipation. There seems to be this in-between, but not yet the celebration, but full of meaning all the same vibe.

I did not enter this next season trying to get belts for being one of God’s strongest soldiers. I entered into this season trying to become more protected. After everything I had no choice but to release this year. I had to decide what was worth guarding and what no longer deserved access to me.

Thanksgiving is a special time for families to come together and express gratitude for the blessings of the past year. While the holiday is traditionally associated with an abundant feast, it's possible to create a memorable Thanksgiving dinner even on a tight budget.

When Giving Up Is Not An Option

in , , by Linda B Hurd, December 23, 2021

When I left my hometown a week ago with my son and daughter, I promised not to go back to live. I spent one week in my auntie’s trailer praying and not losing hope. My kids and I slept on a cot in a small walk-in closet-like room surrounded by our belongings. I would curl my body into an S position for my son to sleep behind my daughter and me to nurse throughout the night.

I swatted away mosquitos and fanned my children with a piece of cardboard to ease their night sweats. For the past two months, my son has been trying to adjust to every hotel room and routine we created to survive.

You have made it to another month! Do your little dance! Last month had its own troubles and lessons that have been learned now. November 2020 has come quickly. It’s mind-blowing to think about how soon. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here.

My Audubon Zoo Lights Experience 2019

in , , by Linda B Hurd, December 23, 2019
Let me tell you what went down during our trip to the Audubon Zoo Lights! My husband and I wanted to take Eli back to the zoo before Christmas. We all love seeing holiday light displays. Eli has been captivated by the lights in display in our neighborhood. Plus, no matter the weather, we were determined to get out of the house as a family.

Christmas is not even here yet, and people are already talking about who they are cutting off for the new year. I have been learned that I must be woman enough to do any deleting and sorting in different areas of my life before the new year.

During this time of year, there are always folks saying to don’t forget to check on your strong friend(s.) It is true and it is best to check on them! I always labeled myself as that strong friend. When the holiday season approaches my inner strength increases. It’s like I go into an overcharge of raging emotions.

As we all are aware, Christmas is right around the corner. It’s time to get a head start on budgeting and creating some great affordable gift giving ideas. I believe that a great gift for her can be skincare essentials! Bring a glow to her smile and skin with these 5 great skin care gifts for under $50.00. No bank breaking involved with this list!

Since I was around 5 years old I knew what it meant to be the "less fortunate." Before Thanksgiving and Christmas would come around and until I was about 12 years old I started bracing myself mentally to be viewed as a charity case.

Your spending budget on gifts for Christmas is possibly already tight when the question is popped by a guy in your life who you aren't necessarily dating gets asked. "So, what you buying me?"

It could probably be a question that you want to answer with a sarcastic question or answer. However, you don't have to wonder too long about a few of the reasons he is wanting a Christmas gift from you. Here are a few reasons why he wants you to buy him a gift, but he isn't your man!

There is no need to feel like you have no plans made to spend quality time with your man! Of course, you don’t want to over plan the time that you have with him and you want to make it special. Here are a few ways to have a few things already planned for those holidays with your love!

Girl, look at that chocolate cake! It's about to go down! There I was staring at a homemade German Chocolate cake my mother-in-law made for Thanksgiving 2015. I have always been a desserts first kinda girl after praying and chit-chatting with the family. The only thing that was keeping me away from the chocolate cake that year was time. However, I didn't allow my eyes to fill my plate and to not have any stomach room for that cake! Last year, I learned that over eating during the holiday season isn't always a comfy feeling nor was it good for my health. Here are a few ways to NOT over eat this holiday season and still enjoy good cooking!
